Nelly Furtado – Mi Plan

Nelly Furtado has achieved one of her dreams by producing an album entirely in Spanish. Not that she hadn’t sung in Spanish before; of note are past collaborations with artists such as Juanes, Wisin & Yandel and Calle 13. I personally loved her Spanish song “No Hay Igual,” from her album Loose.

Ledisi – Turn Me Loose

Ledisi’s latest release is an album whose modest rises and falls depend on the song and the producer, rarely on the singer. On every song Ledisi sings and sings and sings with an instrument that never fails to impress. Unfortunately, the songs and the rotating producers are not always in alignment with the artist’s considerable gifts. After such a strong, commercially successful major label debut, Lost and Found, the hope was that there would be more chances taken on the follow-up to the Grammy nominated project, not less. Yet, Verve’s predictable move to pair Ledisi with a slew of declining hitmakers was almost the album’s undoing. Luckily, long-time collaborator Rex Rideout along with young and restless production wunderkinds like the Frye Dept and Lorenzo Johnson ride to milady’s rescue, making Turn Me Loose a solid, if uneven affair.

Sugababes – Get Sexy

“Get Sexy” is the name of a 2009 single performed by English girl group Sugababes , written by Phillip Lawrence, Ari Levine, Bruno Mars and produced by American production outfit the Smeezingtons (comprised of Lawrence and Mars) for the band’s seventh studio album, Sweet 7 (see 2009 in music). It features an interpolation of Right Said Fred’s “I’m Too Sexy”, composed by Christopher Fairbrass, Richard Fairbrass, and Robert Manzoli.

The song was the album’s opening track, and was released as its lead single at the end of August 2009. It is also the last single from the group to feature Keisha Buchanan after it was announced in September 2009 that she was no longer part of the group and will not be featured on the album.

50 Cent dropped his new mixtape War Angel as a free download last night on his ThisIs50 Website. The mixtape is the first of three that 50 is plotting to release before his oft-delayed Before I Self Destruct comes out in September. War Angel includes the gritty “Redrum” and a sequel of sorts to Wu-Tang Clan’s “C.R.E.A.M,” fittingly called “C.R.E.A.M. 2,” with 50 rapping, “Cash rules I keep a shooter ’round me, Queens get the money, I’ll have a nigga kill y’all.” Taking a page from the Jay-Z playbook, 50 declares “Goons don’t use Auto-Tune” in the opening track “I Line Niggas”

What did Bill Kaulitz do with his charisma? With his over-the-top goth-pop vocals — and even more baroque hairspray-and-mascara styling — the 20-year-old singer has made this German band one of Europe’s most popular and irresistible groups. But on Humanoid, he sounds strangely reduced. In part, it’s a question of hooks: With the exception of “Hey You” and “World Behind My Wall,” the album is melodically anemic and strangely low-key. Subtle is not a mode that suits Kaulitz — just check the coiffure.
